Who organizes the Jewish School of Art?
The Jewish School of Art is a project of the Institut für Neue Soziale Plastik. It is funded by the federal program “Demokratie leben!”, from the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and co-financed by the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.
Why do we need a Jewish School of Art?
After October 7, 2023, it became clear that antisemitism is a problem in parts of the art world. The Jewish School of Art is an artistic response to this. The Jewish School of Art aims to promote artistic exchange and encourages the development of new perspectives on the art and culture scene.
What costs should I expect?
The program is free of charge for you. However, there is a deposit of €50, which will be refunded when you attend the class/workshop.
Do I have to be Jewish to apply for the Jewish School of Art?
No, you do not have to be Jewish or an expert on antisemitism to apply for the Jewish Art School.
Is there an age limit?
We consider you a young adult up to the age of 39.
I am no longer a student. Can I still take part?
Yes, absolutely. Alumni and professionals with relevant experience are also welcome.
Do I have to work on a specific topic?
No, you can choose your own topics. You don‘t have to work on the topic of antisemitism.
Can I participate in just one event?
Yes, you can register for just one workshop/masterclass. However, you are expected to attend on all the scheduled days.
Can I present my work publicly at the end of the semester?
Yes, from September 4 – 7, 2025, a selection of the works created will be presented to the public in Berlin. All participating students will have the opportunity to present their work, but not all submitted works can be shown in the final public presentation.
I can’t be in Berlin on September 4-7, 2025 for the final presentation. Can I still register?
That's a pity. But yes, of course, you can still participate in one of the workshops that do not include a final performance or similar at the end.
Can I register without a project idea?
Simple answer: Yes. The project idea can also develop out of the workshop.
Where do the individual events take place?
Depending on the genre, the workshops take place at various locations in Berlin. Once you’re successfully registered, you’ll receive the exact address of your workshop/class.
Do I have to live in Berlin to take part in the Jewish Art School?
No, interested parties from the rest of the country are also welcome. We will be happy to help you find accommodation.
Can I get credits/points for my regular studies?
No, we’re not accredited for that yet. But you will receive a certificate of completion from the Jewish School of Art after successful participation.
How big are the courses/classes?
Depending on the class, 5-15 participants will be admitted.
Are artists from the 1st semester participating again?
Yes, some classes will consist of students from both the 1st and 2nd semesters. Other classes will be held for the first time in the 2nd semester.
Can I still join if I wasn't there for the 1st semester?
Of course you can!
Who selects the participating students?
The participants will be selected by the board of the INSP.
