Our focus area

Antisemitism in arts and culture

The picture shows a section of the stage set for the theater production Dualidarity. A spotlight on the ceiling illuminates a wall with a large image of a fragmented ancient sculpture of Apollo. A hand and upside-down feet and calves can be seen.

Working on Jewish themes and calling out antisemitism regularly leads to antisemitic reactions – also in the arts and culture. And so, looking at antisemitism in artistic works, structures and institutions has turned into a main focus of our work at Institut für Neue Soziale Plastik.

Consultancy for cultural institutions

The Institute offers taylor-made consultancy services for artistic and cultural institutions, independent groups, artists and other industry bodies. This includes organising workshops or training and further education opportunities regarding memorial culture, contemporary Jewish life, or antisemitism. The Institute’s team can provide artistic consultancy for curatorial and production processes, can mediate in conflict situations surrounding antisemitism and can advise on programming.

These services are designed in an interdisciplinary way by the Institute’s artists, historians and educationalists, drawing on its close network of Jewish and non-Jewish cultural workers alike who share a clear and critical perception of antisemitism in all its forms.

As taylor-made and specific as such consultancy processes always are they all share the Institute’s focus: to design innovative strategies strengthening culture and artistic practice as a way to effect change in society.

Own productions

The Institute was founded by Jewish artists and other artists cricital of antisemitism in order to create artistic projects from Jewish points of view that address issues of Jewish contemporary life and heritage, as well as memorial culture and antisemitism. Our own works include performances, exhibitions and sometimes projects that draw on educational or participatory approaches.

Policy advancement

Based on transparent analysis and broad experiential knowledge the Institute develops specific policy advice on how to deal with current challenges in cultural and artistic contexts. The Institute offers training and policy development sessions with public administration bodies in the arts and culture. A number of the Institute’s ideas and policies have been taken up by political actors, Jewish organisations and cultural bodies underlining the existence of a strong demand for this kind of policy advancement work.
