Where to now? Topographies of Jewish survival after 1945

The picture shows the exhibition view of the first tour of the Jewish Art School. Three people are looking at a painting of a vending machine with water bottles, jam jars, fruit and vegetables in a gallery.

The question »Where to now?« was asked by hundreds of thousands of Jews after their liberation in 1945. Institut für Neue Soziale Plastik and Munich’s Kammerspiele theatre take up this question to explore it anew through an artistic programme that explores the years following the Holocaust from Jewish perspectives. In two world premieres a focus is put on the biographies of Mordechai Teichner, who emigrated to Israel, and Philipp Auerbach, who worked as Bavarian State Commissioner for the Persecuted, attempting to rebuild Jewish life in Germany. In a show trial in Munich in 1952 he was sentenced to prison, whereupon he committed suicide. These new productions are accompanied by a programme of discussions, readings and participatory projects linking historical events with current questions about antisemitism and memorial culture.

The events at Munich’s Kammerspiele are being held in co-operation with, amongst others, the Jewish Museum Munich and institutions in Israel such as the Cinematheque Haifa.
